I’ve covered the US role in “Houthis attack, Yemenis suffer” under president Joe Biden’s administration. I followed the continuous strikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen after the Iranian-backed group launched a campaign targeting ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden over Israel’s actions in Gaza. The US and UK launched operations against the Houthis, which vowed retaliation.

In the US, I’ve reported on threats around 9/11 anniversaries, “worldwide caution” alerts, Egypt military funding, attempts to end Gulf and Iraq wars, record killings by police, the saga over a Chinese surveillance balloon, and the killing of a homeless person in New York City.

I’ve written about charges against IRGC members for targeting an Iranian activist in the US, as well as US sanctions on Iran over human rights abuses; charges against Chinese citizens; the transferring of Guantanamo Bay detainees, and potential knowledge of torture in the facility.

At Mic, I did a string of listicles on the impact of CIA involvement in the Middle East, changing Iraqi borders throughout history, and twelve stories of Palestinians who were killed in Israel’s 2014 offensive against Gaza. ISIS was also growing at the time, so I rounded up photos of Iraqi Christian heritage, historic Mosul city before it was destroyed, and pre-war Iraq.

On Israel and Gaza

After the Hamas attack and hostage taking in October 2023, I reported on Israel’s deadly military operations in Gaza, the US role and support of Israel, warnings against Iran, and the growing humanitarian crises in the Palestinian territory.

This work ranged from covering calls for a two-state solution, multiple demands for a pause and a ceasefire, unsubstantiated attacks on the UNRWA agency, lack of support for American troops to Israel, and blocking of American humanitarian aid.

Additionally, I reported on Canada blocking military exports to Israel, and reactions by the US Jewish community. I wrote about the several government resignations over policies regarding Israel and Palestine.

With respect to US-Israel relations, I reported on changing claims about withholding or sending military support to Israel, threats to cut military aid, American doctors in Gaza hospitals, Biden’s ties with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the deadly Israeli strike on World Central Kitchen aid workers, and the failed Gaza aid pier. This also included the transition between American presidencies, and Donald Trump’s hopes for hostage releases.

On US politics

As a reporter, I’ve followed and covered the entire Joe Biden presidency, including his attempts to expand US rail, boost the economy, address inflation, increase refugee admission, cancel student debt, introduce an assault weapons ban, pardon marijuana possession convictions, and manage dog issues on the White House grounds.

And with Covid, I covered his work to “resist becoming numb” to a rising death toll amid a pressure to “return to normal.”

As par the course, I’ve followed the State of the Union, debt ceiling, and funding bills in Congress.

In late 2020 and early 2021, I wrote about the presidential transition between Biden and Trump, which included a contentious electoral college formalization and failed Trump legal challenges. I covered the Congressional electoral certification and pro-Trump attack at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, which preceded moves to impeach and invoke the 25th Amendment.

I’ve also covered the first and second Trump administrations. In his first presidency, I covered his budget proposals, executive orders, environmental rule changes, as well as his threat to send federal agents to a US city, and the implementation of his controversial travel ban. In his second presidency, I wrote on his reversals of offshore drilling protection and 2,000-pound bomb shipments to Israel, as well as his order threatening to end birthright citizenship.

On the democracy and political violence fronts, I’ve covered racial equality, Congressional threats, violent attacks on Congress members and family members, bomb threats against Trump nominees, an assassination attempt against Trump, and warnings about American democracy by Biden and others.

And, beyond Washington, I’ve written about the indictment of New York City mayor Eric Adams, controversial expulsion votes, abortion access, and ongoing discussions over gun rights.

I dove deep into what the far-right Project 2025 plan is ahead of the 2024 election.

On US elections

While on election night duty at The National, I got my byline on the main reports declaring Donald Trump’s second election win.

During the campaign season between vice president Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, I covered democracy concerns, including her calling Trump a “fascist”, and anything related to the Middle East and the Arab-American community for The National.

After Joe Biden ended his re-election bid, I helped cover Harris’ historic run from the rush nomination to Tim Walz picked as her vice president candidate. I followed the “uncommitted” voter movement in the Democratic Party over the issue of Gaza, and how there was an outcry over a lack of a Palestinian-American voice at the Democratic National Convention. I reported on both Israeli and Palestinian voices at the DNC.

I’ve briefly covered news in the 2020 election, writing about campaign rallies during a pandemic and a farmer who spoke at the DNC after previously voting for Trump.

I’ve written about American voters, midterm elections, Gavin Newsom’s recall, the youngest Black mayor in the US, and new party leaders in both the Democratic and Republican parties, including the days-long saga of electing a new Republican House speaker.

Refugees have been a focus of mine: I’ve covered the rising number of people forced to leave their homes globally and the high migrant death rate in the Mediterranean Sea despite fewer risking the passage in 2019, as well as sexual violence male refugees experience while migrating to Europe.

At the beginning of my career, I covered Yemeni hunger amid multiple crises while at Voice of America. And I rounded up human rights crises tragedies to address at Mic.

On public health threats

In 2022, I extensively covered the mpox epidemic in Western countries, especially with US citiesSan Francisco and New York—becoming the epicenter of the outbreak. I reported on the US stretching and growing its vaccine stockpile, plus its support for the global mpox response.

I also put up reports about the WHO declaring a global health emergency over the mpox outbreak in 2024 after the Africa CDC announced a continental emergency.

And I briefly covered the polio virus outbreak detected in New York City’s wastewater after a rare US death.

With the H5N1 bird flu spreading in the US, I’ve written about the WHO’s concern and the first death recorded in the US.

My public health coverage also touched upon cancer, auris fungus, and RSV, as well as what Robert F Kennedy Jr’s appointment means for pandemic preparedness.

On the COVID-19 pandemic

At The National, anything related to COVID-19 was my news beat and I covered everything from COVID-19 variants to testing, mask mandates to vaccine mandates, travel restrictions to vaccine boosters, and hospital admittances to rising death tolls, as well as FDA and CDC approvals of vaccines by various manufacturers. I wrote about changing health advisory guidance and the historic Operation Warp Speed vaccine program.

As a domestic presidential transition took place during one of the worst winter Covid surges, and during the vaccine rollout, I followed pivotal developments and comments on the pandemic, spreading misinformation, or the ongoing economic fallout. I covered the many vaccination and reopening goals. Later on, I wrote about infections of Joe Biden and other US leaders.

Beyond just the virus spread, I also reported on the longevity impacts of Long Covid, and the ongoing debate over the origins of Covid.

And when the US ended the national emergency after three years, I continued to report on daily deaths and cases in future global surges, including at the Olympics.

With each milestone, I made sure to cover the impact and reach of the Covid virus — from when the US death toll surpassed the 1918 flu outbreak, and the HIV/Aids epidemic. This also included records set in hospital admissions and cases.

As part of the 2021 year-in-review at The National News, I did a deep dive into how the US fight against Covid was marked in mass death and vaccine hesitancy.

Being in New York during the pandemic myself, I reported on many of the milestones the city went through as the epicenter for the US outbreak, including the anniversary of the first coronavirus case and when Broadway, in-person schooling, and the Met Gala returned.

Earlier, at Quartz and Courier Newsroom, I covered a 7,000% rise in global travel restrictions, Covid testing delays, debate over when to return to school sports.

On American higher education

I covered colleges and universities while at USA Today, including how US government decisions affected young Americans.

My time while reporting for USA Today was during the first Trump administration, where I wrote about plagiarism controversies, support for low-income students, and campus immigration raids. I covered how academics responded to Trump’s travel ban and called for the end of his immigration order, while scholars skipped attending US events. I also touched upon issues of offensive signage on campuses, protest tactics, and rescinding admission offers.

About campus life, I reported on application seasons hitting records—including how hard it is to get into an Ivy League school—racism scandals, Black Lives Matter, sexual assault, campus rape reports, and job hunting after college.

As a news curator at heart, I did a weekly curated roundup of university and college journalism where I poured through dozens of campus publications to highlight some of the most important and interesting events for students.

I also curated online colleges, graduate schools, and law degree programs—and also graduation photo shoots, commencement speeches, and acceptance letters.

On US legal developments

While at The National, I made domestic legal developments another news beat of mine. I covered how Trump became the first US president found guilty of a crime, and being booked at a jail with a mugshot taken.

I followed the House of Representatives’ panel hearings on the January 6 insurrection, reporting on new evidence, revelations, and details.

I covered much of Donald Trump’s legal cases—with a deep dive feature looking ahead into his 2024 year of legal challenges—from the New York hush money trial to the classified documents case, plus business fraud, sexual assault, and Espionage Act charges.

I wrote about many developments in the federal cases into Trump from the beginning—special masters and appeals and all—to when special counsel Jack Smith dismissed them before Trump’s second inauguration.

With the probes into possessing sensitive documents, I looked into how common it is among US leadership and then the investigation into Biden’s handling of such files.

I also reported about other legal cases, including terrorism charges, Palestinian lawsuits against the US government over its support of Israel, and how the US Justice Department tried to appeal a court ruling lifting a Covid travel mask mandate.

On whatever else

With being a general news writer at times throughout my career, I’ve written about the Olympic refugee team, NASA’s Perseverance on Mars, climate change, Christmas trees, rocket launches, dolphins in New York City, and a rejected Dolly Parton statue. For fun, I’ve marked Pi Day, St Paddy’s Day, and Friday the 13th.

As one fascinated with extreme weather, I’ve pitched in on covering natural disasters in Canada, Turkey, Texas, flooding and earthquakes in New York City, heavy rains and fire seasons in California.

Through in-depth features and news packages, I’ve extensively written about the COVID-19 pandemic, anti-war student protests, global migration, human rights issues and humanitarian crises, and accessibility for deaf people.

On the Covid-19 pandemic: Three pieces — US surpasses ‘staggering’ 1 million COVID-19 deaths, What’s next for the US after 1 million COVID-19 deaths? and US activists call for permanent Covid memorials to help country mourn — were part of a prepared news package around the milestone at The National News.

As part of the 2021 year-in-review at The National, I did a deep dive into how the US fight against Covid was marked in mass death and vaccine hesitancy. I also took a look at how the COVID-19 pandemic killed more people in the US than the HIV and AIDS epidemic did in 40 years, and how the two different diseases somehow relate.

In 2020, I worked with Courier Newsroom to provide a weekly curated roundup on “non-political coronavirus updates” and essential information for readers.

On the pro-Palestine student protests: I made covering the sweeping student developments at many Western colleges and universities a news beat while at The National, referencing my past higher education reporting experience at USA Today.

And I made sure to do a few features, one in collaboration with two other reporters on the historic moment in American student protest history and another on rights experts describing “hypocrisy” of the US police crackdown on the encampments.

On global migration: At Quartz, I took a deep dive into how the European Union claimed the migrant crisis was “over” in 2019 and how that wasn’t exactly true, including interviews with refugee and migrant experts.

Earlier in the pandemic, I collaborated with a Quartz colleague covering the “catastrophic” worldwide aid shortage refugees were experiencing.

On human rights issues and humanitarian crises: I looked into the numbers around how many Uyghur Muslims were detained in China for Quartz in 2018, as an unique way to corroborate and possibly verify the amount of people imprisoned.

I spoke with an American doctor who traveled to Gaza in 2024 about what he saw while working at a hospital in the Palestinian territory for a piece at The National, and he described “children shot in the head every day.”

On accessibility for deaf people: I covered the podcast industry’s lack of meeting the deaf and hard of hearing community’s needs in a Quartz feature.

And I wrote about how face masks are excluding the deaf and hard of hearing community and Zoom fatigue as something the deaf community knows very well at Quartz during the early days in the Covid pandemic.

At the beginning of my career, I discussed how technology could threaten deaf identity for The Atlantic.
